White, as a color, has been a powerful universal metaphor for cleanliness, purity, and naivete. Yet, why is it that white is good and black bad? This question brings more questions than answers: What is “good”? According to whom? Which value system defines it? Is there such a thing as a universal good? Is it even possible to define without bias? Who is responsible for determining values that transcend all other values and languages? Are not many actors oppressing others, committing genocides, normalizing racism, and carrying out the worse atrocities worldwide in the name of ‘good’? How did we accept this rhetoric so readily? A variable white series, “Yoyo white,” draws attention to the malleability of the color white while questioning its very definition.
